CannaBiz: The Secret Economy of Marijuana

Canada’s $20 billion-dollar marijuana industry is now at a violent crossroads between crime and commerce. Impossible to police, yet steadily gaining public acceptance, the cannabis industry is now so vast and vital to Canada’s national economy that it can no longer be ignored.

CannaBiz unfolds in Grand Forks, BC, a small border town nestled in the Kootenay Mountains, where draft dodgers planted the first BC Bud in the 1960s. After the pine beetle chewed through what was left of the forest industry, marijuana became the backbone of the local economy.

In secret forest plots, basements, barns and high-tech underground bunkers, growers nurture some of the world’s most potent bud. Most of the marijuana here, and in the rest of Canada, is destined for the US market, where a pound of premium weed sells for a street price of $4,500.

Across the country, formerly laid-back marijuana growers now live in fear of armed thieves, and smugglers take huge risks to cross the beefed up American border. Conflicted police and RCMP officers like Harland Venema continue to fight a seemingly futile battle.

In Grand Forks, Brian Taylor, once nicknamed the marijuana mayor, is campaigning for medical marijuana as a prescription for economic prosperity. Ex con Sam Mellace dreams of supplying medical marijuana nationally through Shoppers Drug Mart outlets.

Marijuana: A Chronic History

The fight against drug use in America has been going on since the turn of the last century but the term War on Drugs only became part of our national dialog in 1970 when it was first used by President Richard Nixon.

The President later formed the DEA and started a push to outlaw drugs of all kinds. Among the most discussed drugs in this war is Marijuana.

This special will look at the storied and strange history of Marijuana in America. Probably one of the better documentaries, mostly seems pro-cannabis and by far the most pro-cannabis documentary thus far released by the History Channel.

The documentary attempts to educate everyone who still has a Reefer Madness mindset, who still thinks cannabis prohibition is reasonable, and who have no idea that widespread cannabis use is relatively harmless compared to alcohol, tobacco, and especially pharmaceutical and other drugs.

Strain Hunters

Strain Hunters is a series of documentaries aimed at informing the general public about the quest for the preservation of the cannabis plant in the form of particularly vulnerable landraces originating in the poorest areas of the planet.
The sole intent of Strain Hunters is to identify, locate and retrieve cannabis landraces that have not yet been studied, in order to give scientists and doctors the possibility to further enhance knowledge of the cannabis plant in the medicinal field. Many previously unknown cannabinoid profiles are contained in cannabis landraces originating from areas where there is no possibility of scientific research.

One day these plants could be helpful in developing better medications for the sick and the suffering. We feel it is our duty to preserve as many cannabis landraces in our genetic database, and by breeding them into other well-studied medicinal strains for the sole purpose of scientific research.

During the making of the Strain Hunters documentaries no harm was done to any person, animal, plant, or the environment. All carbon emissions generated by this project have been offset by planting thousands of seeds.

The Strain Hunters documentaries have the defined and limited purpose of information to the general public. Strain Hunters do not endorse or promote illegal activities of any kind.

Tips for the Savvy Smoker and Tasteful Toker

If knowledge is power, then comparison is king. Your knowledge, and more specifically, your knowledge of smoking, is only as good as your ability to compare with other information. This quick guide will help any level of smoker become a savvy smoker and a tasteful toker.

Get the Goods: The savvy smoker knows the best way to find a marijuana dispensary. Although location is key – the closer the better – medical marijuana dispensaries vary in how they manage clients. Some restrict the amount of marijuana a client can take home after each visit to under one ounce, and others require delivery for lack of a retail storefront. However, even those that do have retail storefronts may not offer delivery. Compare medical marijuana dispensaries to find the right one for you. You can see how the comparisons look like and do comparisons for the dispensaries in your area.

Squeaky Clean Smiles: Even before Orbit Gum told us to clean up our dirty mouths, we knew it: brilliant white teeth aren’t just for models and movie stars. Smoking, along with aging and coffee drinking, rates among one of the top teeth-yellowing agents. However, the number of teeth whitening products outnumbers the teeth in your mouth by more than two to one. Fortunately, you can compare teeth whitening products – all 76 of them – online, before you head out to buy.

Manage Your Munchies: A Wendy’s Triple Baconator or a McDonald’s Big Breakfast with Hotcakes might be heaven for taste buds, but they’re hell for waistlines. As the old adage goes: Everything in moderation. Before your next fast food frenzy, compare fast food nutrition – all your favorites are there – to beat the bulge.

Know Your Limit: For celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, and Charlie Sheen, going to rehab is like a bi-weekly trip to the supermarket. For everyone else, rehab is serious business. To find a drug treatment center for your needs, it’s best to compare your options. Understanding the type of care and the programs offered is key to getting the most from a rehab program.
